http://www.wales-cymru.org: The co-directors of the Llanwenarth Arms were fined £40,000 and £5,500 costs after pleading guilty on behalf of the business to charges of selling food that was unfit to eat and harmful to health.

Co-Directors, Mr John West and Mr Richard Wallace, had their case heard at Abergavenny Magistrates Court this week (Tuesday 24th March).

The court heard that in April 2008 Environmental Health Officers at Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) received a number of reports of people becoming ill with salmonella infection.  Investigations soon identified a common link - the Llanwenarth Arms Hotel in Abergavenny.

The court heard that the cause of the outbreak was linked to the use of raw shell eggs in a range of uncooked foods, including mayonnaise, ice-cream, hollandaise sauce and Kiwi Parfait desert.  The court heard that in preparing food the business had not followed its own documented food safety procedures, based upon Hazard Analysis at Critical Control Points (HACCP).

Councillor Bryan Jones, MCC's Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said:

http://www.wales-cymru.org: The next generation of footballers in Monmouthshire are donning their studs and taking to the field thanks to the launch of The Waitrose Monmouth Town Football Academy.

The joint venture between Monmouth Comprehensive School and the Welsh Assembly's 5x60 programme - a Sports Council for Wales managed scheme which aims to get secondary school pupils in Wales more active, more often - has been kicked off in a bid to increase the number of youngsters in the area participating in football and also to improve the quality of training and coaching on offer.

The academy took on its first recruits in September and has been working closely with Monmouth Town FC to provide its budding Beckhams with specialist coaching to help raise their game.

Adrian Sully, 5x60 Officer at Monmouth Comprehensive School, explains:

"This football academy is the first of many similar projects I aim to establish at the school. Since its inception in September, numbers have continued to grow and members are benefitting from an increased number of training sessions and professional help from staff at Monmouth Town FC, who are helping them to reach their full potential.

"The Sports Council for Wales provided us with a grant of £2,000 to put towards the establishment of the academy, which is now running out of the school's facilities and attended by our 5x60 participants twice a week.

Links between ourselves and Monmouth Town FC have proved vital in the success of the project, not only do they provide us with their expertise, they also donate the use of their equipment - we hope in time that they will benefit from the academy and become the exit route for our budding young footballers."

Two training sessions a week are held for boys aged 11-16, with a girls only training session taking place on a Wednesday night.

5x60 provides pupils with a mixed bag of opportunities and since the launch of the £7.6million scheme in October 2006 has transformed the playing fields and sports halls of 98% of the secondary schools across the country into hubs of bustling activity.

http://www.wales-cymru.org: Caerphilly county borough council is introducing a number of exciting changes to its refuse and recycling services this year in a bid to encourage all local residents to reduce, reuse and recycle even more.

The first step in this process is the introduction of new wheelie bins in many areas across the county borough for kerbside recycling. These brown coloured bins will replace the existing plastic boxes in over 50,000 properties.

The bins will be distributed to households across the county borough and will be used alongside the normal wheeled bins. If your property does not receive a wheelie bin, you will receive an information letter explaining how you may request one.

Also, in April, the popular fortnightly garden waste collection service will resume to help residents recycle grass cuttings, prunings and other green material from the garden.

The council has made a commitment to meet tough new recycling targets over the next few years. This year's target is to recycle at least 40% of household waste and this will rise to 70% over the next 15 years.

Cllr Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment, said, "In order for us to achieve these ambitious goals the council is urging everyone to do their bit for a cleaner, greener Caerphilly. Dumping our waste in landfill is no longer an option so we need to look at new and innovative ways of dealing with household refuse to increase our opportunities to recycle more."

http://www.wales-cymru.org: The local Youth Offending Service (YOS) are appealing for volunteers who can help change the lives of youngsters from across the Caerphilly county borough.

The YOS are appealing for members of the community, who would like to make a real difference to the lives of local youngsters, to become volunteer community panel members.

Community panel members sit on a youth offender panel – a young person is referred to the panel by the courts via a sentence called a referral order. This can be given to 10-17 year olds who appear in court for the first time and have pleaded guilty.

Panel members then have an initial meeting with the young person and their parents/carers to talk about the reasons for the young persons offending behaviour and to discuss a way forward.

The victim of the young person's crime is also encouraged to attend the meeting to tell the young person how the crime has affected them. At the end of the meeting, all those involved agree a contract with the young person.

EnviroGene continues with their programme of expansion at Tredomen Park, Ystrad Mynach.

http://www.wales-cymru.org: Wales is fortunate in that it plays host to some of the best water-borne leisure activities in the United Kingdom, with people travelling sometimes hundreds of miles for the outstanding surfing and fishing the principality has to offer.

The days when the Bristol Channel wasn't fit to bathe in are thankfully long gone, and its thanks to companies like Envirogene from Ystrad Mynach, who's technological advances have ensured the monitoring and improvement of our local coastal waters continues to be an ongoing priority.

The company identifies the source of contaminants in ground water using molecular diagnostics and nanoparticle tracing technology. Rob Sleat, Managing Director, established the company in 2006 with one small business suite at Tredomen Innovation & Technology Centre.

The company has now expanded to 12 highly qualified staff and have located their EnviroTrace production facility to Tredomen Park. Dr Mieke Heyde, from Oxford, manages the EnviroTrace facility in the recently adapted suite at the Innovation Centre.

"We are delighted to have been able to assist EnviroGene with their expansion plans," said Allison Ward, Industrial Property Officer, Caerphilly County Borough Council. "EnviroGene has impeccable environmental credentials and have rapidly gained a global reputation."
