http://pr.cannazine.co.uk : According to news sources in South Wales a campaign is being waged against the proposed bio-fuel plant which has been provisionally planned for Newport. Organisations invloved in the campaign include Biofuelwatch and Food Not Fuel, both of which cite deforestation and world food shortages as reasons not to go ahead with the 25 megawatt biofuels plant, which would consume upwards of 40,000 tonnes of vegetable oil a year, in creating 75% of the electricity power needs for Newport householders.
They also claim biofuel use for power generation has a negative impact on food production both here and abroad, potential adverse climate change effects, links to deforestation and even human rights abuses in producing countries. They claimed the volume of fuel which would be used in the power station was considerable and some was likely to be palm oil imported from south east Asia. Vogen Energy (http://www.vogenenergy.com) Based in South Wales UK, and funded through private equity, Vogen Energy is an expert in Renewable Energy Infrastructure, Technology and Supply Chain Development.
Vogen Energy chief executive, Harvey West, defended the proposed facility. He said Vogen were committed to using only unrefined bio-oils from accredited sustainable sources at the Newport plant.
"We will be able to use around 12 different kinds of bio-oil at the flagship combined heat and oil plant, of which sustainably sourced and accredited palm oil would obviously be one as it is a globally available commodity.
"However, in the first instance our oils will be sourced from indigenous UK oils available here in Wales and the United Kingdom."
