BABIES born in Swansea on Friday will be getting a special birthday present courtesy of the city's Lord Mayor.
Each child will be given a silver coin specially minted by the Royal Mint to commemorate their birthday and the 40th anniversary of the announcement that Swansea was to receive city status.
The special coins will be distributed via the registrar's service and are just part of celebrations of Swansea's birth as a city.
On Friday, July 3, pupils from Bishopston Comprehensive, Cefn Hengoed Comprehensive and Penybryn Special School will put items in a time capsule to be stored in the archives at Swansea's civic centre for the next 40 years to be opened on the city's 80th birthday celebrations.
For those reaching their 40th birthday or 40th wedding anniversary on Swansea's big day there will also be a series of garden parties being hosted by the Lord Mayor at the Mansion House. So far 11 couples celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary between July 3rd and December 10th 2009 have come forward to join in the events.
And on July 11th a Freedom Ceremony for 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards (The Welsh Cavalry) including a march through our city centre will also be part of the celebrations.
July 3rd 1969 was the date when the Prince of Wales, just two days after his investiture at Caernarvon Castle, first announced Swansea was to receive city status.
The announcement was made on the steps of Swansea's historic Guildhall during a tour of the country.
That honour was officially granted five months later in December 1969.
Swansea Council Lord Mayor Cllr Alan Lloyd said: "I am delighted to be Lord Mayor in such an important year in the city and we hope that this date will be celebrated by young and old."
