Come into Newport city centre on Friday 10 July between 10am and 2pm, visit the re-launched farmers’ market and pick up your copy of the 2009 Fairtrade Directory.

The farmers’ market is held in John Frost Square and sells a range of products including eggs, chutneys, cheese, meats and crepes.
With conscious food choices, supporting local traders and shopping local in mind, this Friday’s market is teaming up with the Fairtrade team who will be launching their new directory which profiles the Fairtrade outlets available throughout Newport. You can also pick up a free farmers bag-for-life.

The Fairtrade group was founded in April 2006 and achieved Fairtrade City status for Newport in February 2008. They worked with local traders and were supported by Newport Initiative (the informal partnership working with a variety of public, private and community sector organisations for the benefit of the city centre).

Since achieving Fairtrade City status there has been a significant growth in Fairtrade outlets. The directory will shortly go online, allowing it to be regularly updated as new businesses come on board.

Suzannah Evans, from The University of Wales Newport is the new Chair of the Fairtrade group in Newport. Suzannah has considerable Fairtrade experience as she worked to achieve Fairtrade status for the University. They organise a range of promotional events including schools art competitions (one of the winner's posters is on the front of the new directory), fashion shows, afternoon teas and wine tasting.

The farmers’ market takes place every second and fourth Friday of the month in John Frost Square. Forthcoming market entertainment includes a stilt walker on July 24 and the first John Frost Square mini food festival on Friday 14 August.
